Background:
Orka Interiör, a Yorkshire interior design studio, is marking five years of successful work and growth this November.
Kim Crowther and Abigail Smith founded the studio in 2020 in a period of uncertainty across the world. They initially collaborated in a massive residential project in Halifax, and they chose to begin their own studio where they would use their experience in commercial design to target the local projects.
Orka is a Scandinavian word that translates to energy, strength, or willpower- the determination and optimism of the founders.
Kim Crowther boasts of an excellent background in commercial interiors, where she has worked on Mitchells and Butlers and redressing pubs, bars, and restaurants around the country. Abigail Smith has worked with major clients including Punch Taverns and Star Pubs & Bars. When the pandemic changed their plans, they decided to start a studio that combined meaningful work with creative freedom.
Kim said that launching Orka during such an uncertain time was a bold step. They wanted to take their commercial design experience and use it to create a more personal, collaborative studio. Now, five years later, the team is proud of what they have achieved and the strong connections they have made.
Orka Interiör has completed many projects across Yorkshire and Greater Manchester, including homes, offices, and hospitality spaces. Their designs combine creativity with practical solutions, creating spaces that are both useful and attractive.
Their work at Lawress Hall in Lincolnshire was even nominated for a Northern Design Award, highlighting the studio’s growing influence in the local design community.
Abigail Smith said that since their first project, the team has gained confidence and grown creatively. She added that they are excited to take on more office design work and bring a new designer into the studio as they continue to expand.
Entering its fifth year, Orka Interiör continues to showcase how energy, skill, and determination can create lasting, inspiring spaces. For more on their work, visit their website and explore a portfolio of refined homes and innovative workplaces.
