Background:

Located in the suburbs of Hertfordshire, England, an 8,500-square-foot home stands out for its mix of Georgian architecture and Indian design. Designed by Rina Patel of Vastu Interior Design, the house blends classic style with the traditional principles of Vastu Shastra, creating a space that is both beautiful and balanced.

The collaboration between Patel and the homeowners began more than two decades ago. The Punjabi couple behind this project, who moved to London in the 1990s and founded one of the UK’s leading South Asian catering companies, Ragasaan, initially worked with Patel for personal events. Years later, when they sought a family home that could host grand gatherings while remaining a cozy family retreat, Patel was the natural choice.

Patel explained that this elemental approach influenced every design choice in the home. “The restriction of a monochromatic palette for each zone became a revelation,” she said. “Texture, lighting, and materials became the tools to add richness without overwhelming the senses.” Marble from Brazil, Italy, and Turkey forms the foundation of the design, with green marble welcoming visitors in the entrance hall, dusky pink onyx accentuating bathrooms, and layered blue marbles enhancing the kitchen’s serene atmosphere.

The house has eight bedrooms with bathrooms, a whiskey lounge, several living rooms, and a cozy family space, all made for both relaxing and entertaining. The owners’ love of French furniture and decorations is seen throughout, adding style and comfort.

This Hertfordshire home tells the story of the owners’ move from India to England and shows how design can mix culture, classic architecture, and daily life.
